Allergens in the Home

Over the past three decades, western countries have seen a dramatic rise in allergic diseases such as asthma, eczema, hayfever and food allergies. The statistics are hard to ignore: peanut allergies have more than doubled in the past five years, one in three children will experience an allergic condition by age five, and hospital admissions for anaphylaxis — a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction — have increased by 700%.

Environmental factors are widely thought to drive this trend, including mode of birth (caesarean delivery), diet (breastfeeding and fermented food consumption) and early antibiotic use. But there's another factor that's easy to overlook: your home itself may be shaping your child's risk of developing asthma and allergies.

What the Amish and Hutterite Children Reveal

A landmark study compared indoor dust microbiomes in the homes of Amish and Hutterite farming families — two communities with strikingly similar genetic ancestry and lifestyles. Despite these similarities, the researchers found dramatically different asthma outcomes: Amish children had an asthma prevalence roughly four to six times lower than Hutterite children. The likely explanation lay in the dust itself. Amish households had endotoxin levels nearly seven times higher than Hutterite homes, along with a distinctly different bacterial composition — differences the researchers linked to the Amish tradition of close, single-family contact with farm animals. When exposed to Amish house dust, mice were protected from airway inflammation in an experimental asthma model; Hutterite dust offered no such protection. What makes this comparison so striking is that the Hutterites, despite sharing similar ancestry and rural life, practise highly industrialised farming that relies heavily on chemical pesticides — most of which have antibacterial properties. Their children are simply not exposed to the same microbial richness as Amish children, even though both groups live on farms.

Why This Matters for Your Cleaning Habits

This research supports a compelling idea: that the microbial exposures in household dust could help shape an infant's developing gut and immune system. It's a plausible mechanism given how much contact infants have with household dust — their breathing zone sits close to the floor, and they ingest up to eight times more dust than the average adult.

The takeaway is simple but important: reaching for chemical, antibacterial cleaning products to "sanitise" your floors and surfaces may be doing your child's developing immune system more harm than good.
